I was attacked by jellyfish on Martha's Vineyard. Not just stung. Attacked. Maybe not even jellyfish but more deadly man-of war.
We arrived at my friend's house at about 5pm on Sunday. Headed out to the beach on a beautiful sunny day Monday. First dive in to the sea..........ouch. All over my face, I knew I was stung immediately. Felt like someone took a broken glass bottle and was stabbing my face by my cheeks repeatedly.
OMG, just got in the water. Couldn't get out right away so I swam some laps. Soon I realized my legs and arms were stinging.... Had to get out. Face in pain. We read to put vinegar on it to remove the sting. Left the beach immediately for Stop & Shop. Had to deal with unfamiliar arrows, walking paths due to Covid. Had to wait in line outside first. Ugh. Long line to pay, there I was shivering in the air condition in my semi-wet bathing suit. Pretty miserable. Had to buy apple cider vinegar--out of white vinegar.
I took a shower as soon as we got back because I couldn't stand that salty feeling n a wet bathing suit. The vinegar actually helped along with Advil and later Benadryl as I saw it redden and swell. Went right to bed-what a way to start.
I've never felt such pain in my life--the sting across my face was awful. Probably because its the most sensitive part of your body.
Recovered--starting itching but at least the sting wasn't so bad. Next day we went to another beach with huge waves. How could I not go in the water?
After we came home a few days later we learned there's an outbreak of Man-of-war coming closer on shore due to global warming. One big reason to stop global warming.
After 2 days the sting subsided and the burn and itch became milder. Not happy but wasn't about to let it ruin my vacation. Tons of sunshine, bike riding, seafood and good friends.
