Do you remember John's Bargain Store on the corner of Canal and something like Lafayette (or one of those streets down there by the subway?). My mother and I bought a couple of items there when I was about 10 or 11. I must have had a brain freeze and walked out with 3 or 4 skeins of yarn in my arms. This was during my crocheting years (ah those granny afghans).
After we walked down the 3 steps out of the store, turned right to go back to Mulberry Street my mother and I realized we didn't pay for the yarn. My thought: yay, we got some yarn for free. My Mom's thought: we have to go back in and pay. Whaat? Oh, ok.
Lesson learned: always listen to your mother.
Since we are talking about Canal Street, the store I am referring to was on the side of Dave's corner, home of the egg cream, which we cannot find any more (no matter how we try). I wonder if I am getting John's Bargain Store confused with another drug store type store across the street.
