Only one problem. I couldn't remember the name of the place. When I goggled Yunnan Province, I couldn't find the picture. So I borrowed the book from my sister-in-law but mysteriously, the picture was not there. Where did I see this picture? In another book? Was I imagining it?
Wrote to my friend June in Shanghai and said, hey, I'm coming to China. Want to go with me to Kunming to see the beautiful canyons? I forget what they are called, but they are famous in Kunming. Sure she said, they're called the Stone Forest. Here it is, http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/yunnan/kunming/stone_forest.htm
No, this isn't it. But let's go anyway. We went for a long weekend and we had a blast!
Day One, we took the funicular to the top of the city and climbed to a temple way up on top!
We seemed to ride in a lot of these open trams back down. The views were breath-taking, but the ride was even better after climbing all the way to the top in the heat.
Day 2. We hired a taxi for the one and a half hour ride to the Stone Forest. We had an English guide, who told us about the beautiful lady, turned to stone called Arshema.
Cab driver took us to a local restaurant where you picked your food & they cooked it! Mushrooms, spicy! View from the restaurant! Women work in the field in this province. |
Afterwards we went to the famous caves. I've been to caves before, but these were huge. I can't imagine the original people who found these and made the paths--lit them too! Sooooo beautiful - like lazer show.
On our final night, we bought some lychees and mangostinos to eat. They were great! Luckily June didn't publish the photo of me sitting on my suitcase to try and close it!
What a great trip! June 2014.
