Andermatt, Switzerland 9/2022

I was so excited to go to Andermatt. I heard the scenery between Andermatt and Oberalppass was beautiful. The train ride from Zermat to Andermatt is just over three hours.

As soon as we arrived we ran to the hotel, checked in, threw our suitcases down and ran right back to the train station for the 20 minute ride to Oberalppass . From over pass, there is a 20 minute gondola (🚠 ) up to the top. Only problem was it was 230 by the time we got up to the top we would have to turn right around since the last cable card down was at 4 PM. Bummer. Let’s try again tomorrow.

As we walked out of the train station I realized we had activated a one day train pass. Honey, why don’t we just hop on the train to Disentis which we were going to do tomorrow. A one hour ride, it would save us 20 Francs round-trip the next day. So that is what we did.

Beautiful church which hubby refused to go into so I quickly took a tour by myself. We were in and out of the Disentis in 30 minutes.

DIINER: Mushroom fondue! Just about as good as the one in Morges.  This was the best meal we had on the trip.

Restaurant Ochsen

I usually travel with a small tube of lotion (or one of the million samples I have gathered over time). This time I had none and the soap was drying out my hands like crazy. Hubby has been known to travel with a huge tub of Eucerin as well, but this time did not bring. Here is a tip. If you go to a nice restaurant or hotel, pump as much lotion into a little sanitary bag as possible. I was able to swipe 30 pumps of beautiful lavender lotion at the steak restaurant in Zermatt.

We struggled with the weather and were indecisive on what to do. You can take the gondola up to the top after a 20 minute train ride to Oberalppass to get to Schneehuenerstock . Or you could take the cable car up to Gutsch which left directly from the train station near us. Hubby saw that there is a one star Michelin restaurant up in Gutsch and the fondue waiter suggested we go to Gutsch then walk to Schneehuenerstock which would be a 45 minute walk. For me that means an hour and a half. Given the rain, and snow on top, there was no way I was going to do that. To my surprise, hubby who hates to walk wanted to do that! So we had a plan. During breakfast we realized the next train was soon so we dashed to the train station to buy tickets. The agent showed us the WebCam and said forget it, do not go. Look, you cannot see anything. Plus the Michelin restaurant was closed.

She said the short walk to the Devils Bridge (Schollenen Gorge) was only 10 minutes from there so we headed out to see that. One of the famous sites in Andermatt. Headed out in the pouring rain, then drizzle, and then luckily it stopped.  What an adventure. This is supposedly where the Swiss defeated the Russians. There is also folklore that the people of URI tricked the devil into building a bridge for them. It’s a wonderful tale and it was a little scary walking through the waterfall and then up and down and through a tunnel over the bridge for a little tour.

You walk down 2 flights of man-made steps in the mountain, across the bridge (scary during rain & fog), through a secret passageway, up a rocky narrow path, view the generators, down open rail steps back over & back up the man-made steps. 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 Don’t look down, but you can hear the rush of the water.
