I'm not a fan of Planet of the Apes nor do I like science fiction. I've tried to watch a couple of Planet of the Apes movies, but they never seem real (somehow you know there are people in the ape costumes). But one scene in particular has always stayed in my mind. Its the end of the movie and the woman ape cries. She has a tear rolling down her face because Man has destroyed earth. It reminds me of the PSA where the American Indian has a tear rolling down his face when he sees all the garbage on land.
This is what I've been thinking of when I see the Gulf Oil disaster on TV -- but it doesn't matter what anyone thinks because THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE.
The oil is spreading and literally no one knows how to stop it. How could this have happened? Why bother fining BP all that money if the damage is done? No amount of money will bring back the birds, shrimp, wetlands, marshlands......and more. The economy is slammed again down there. The images of the oil covered birds are too much to bear. I imagine what it would feel like to be covered with heavy oil and the smell of tar comes to my mind. I can't breathe, I feel suffocated, my pores are clogged, but it doesn't matter what I feel because the damage is done. The birds are dead (not to mention the people who burned on the rig).
Another thought pops through my head which has to do with technology and science. Why was there no disaster plan? Why doesn't anyone know how to cap the oil? We need more scientists in this country.
Sad is not the word, I just keep seeing the ape's tear in my head. Its not science fiction, its real.

While all the fines and finger pointing might not bring back the ecosystem... I do think we need to take this opportunity to re-evaluate the role big corporations and free enterprise play in this country....
It is totally unacceptable to put this one under the "its just business or accidents happen". And everyone knows that's the real attitude BP and other businesses, have for this whole situation. Really sickens me that before they even manage to plug the hole, they started running ads to build their corporate image... a complete lack of shame and a clear indicator that BP are run by top-tier idiots.
In my opinion, we need to not only fine those individuals directly responsible, but also BP as whole company responsible and the US regulatory agency. And if people lose their jobs and money... so be it. Next time work for a company with morals or take action in your job to prevent things like this from happening. I mean... isn't that the whole premise of democracy.
A clear message needs to be send out.... not just to offshore drillers, but the all the industries out their that are pulling the same bullshit BP is.
So while I do agree with this post, I would also like to call out the necessity of taking advantage of this opportunity to fix a core problem in this country.
