May Quan Tsang
She once told me she came to this country when she was 50, but that can't possibly be true.
What's true, and what's a story? Story? She had great stories...........
Macy's
Immigrants in Chinatown had a hard but wonderful life. Chinatown was a closed community. Lucky for Grandma, she didn't have to learn to speak English. Survived in Chinatown, surrounded by Chinese people, speaking Chinese (Cantonese). Know where the big "outside Chinatown" trip was to?????????? MACY'S.......Maceee'ssss..
Take the N train to 34th st and arrive at Macy's. To an elderly Chinese woman, this was NY. Outside the neighborhood, the familiar surroundings... you could buy anything there, Macy's.
IMMIGRANTS
One day she called my sister and summoned her over. Write a letter to the President of the United States and tell them not to let any immigrants in. "Grandma, you're an immigrant". Not the same as these new immigrants. They stole my necklace while I was standing on the Bowery waiting to cross the street...........Two ladies were standing close to me and they must have stolen my necklace when I was waiting to cross the stress. Call the President and tell him not to let in any more immigrants since they stole my necklace.........think we found it in her drawer several months later, who knows......those immigrants.......
