When
my aunt Dorothy died, my cousin April gave me a folder of old documents labeled
“Coming Back to US”, and “Mom coming back to US”. I love to see my Aunt’s handwriting. It was thrilling to open the folder and see
letters on Congress of the United States, House of Representatives
stationary. There were several letters
from Aunt Dorothy’s congressman, Arthur G. Klein, Member of Congress starting
from 1950.
Just
as thrilling was to find my Aunts, Uncles and Father’s depositions, testifying
to the fact that they are natural born US citizens, and that they nor my
Grandmother are Communists, believe in communism, nor would my Grandmother seek
Welfare. The interesting thing though
that I found as well was that the family received loans from the Department of
State, Emergency Loan section. In those
days returning immigrants could get a loan (my two aunts received a loan for
$800 to come back to SF from HK) back in 1948 or so.
