Lisbon, Day 1 March 2019

I used one of the Trip Advisor "3 Days in Lisbon" guides and had an easy time getting around Lisbon.

Day 1
Couldn't find the Yellow Bus Hip On Hop Off bus stop near our hotel at the Marque do Poscal so we ended up walking all the way down the Avenue of Liberty to find one.  What a waste of time.

Once on the bus we saw some of the famous sights of Lisbon like the big Park (across the street from our hotel, the Intercontinental, the Jail, beautiful tiles, etc).

We took the bus to Belem where the itinerary for the day was:

Tower of Belem
Monastery Jeronimo
Museum of Coaches

All 3 accepted the Lisbon Card which we had (+ used it for transportation back to the downtown part of the city).

Our first stop was the famous Cafe for Pastis de Nata.  Do not stand in the line outside, but go inside and sit at a table.  Order a coffee and pastis de Nata-no waiting (get to sit down/use of bathrooms, etc).

Walked to the Monastery Jeronimo.  How beautiful!  The architecture was outstanding.  Couldn't stop taking pictures!

Can you see me way over there?

Next I forced David to walk to the Tower of Belem.  It was hot and he didn't want to.  Short wait and short walk up the spiral steps.  They have a system that tells you (by countdown clock) when you can go up (green), + when you cannot (red).  I felt pressured to walk down fast as I knew the time was running out (we let young people go first.) David had to tell people to stop from going up just as I made it down.

See the famous Monument of the Soldiers behind the Yellow Bus?  We didn't want to walk there so took a picture to prove we'd been there.

Lastly we went to the Museum of Coaches.  Never in a million years did I think I'd have an interest in coaches-but the curation was magnificent.  Biggest collection of coaches in the world.

By luck we met the man who makes models of the coaches.

We took the rail back to the city center but then our Lisbon cards didn't allow us to get out of the metro.  We went to the Lisbon tourist office where David bought the cards and got some good advice from the tour guide about taking the historic Tram 28.  We found the bus back to our hotel,  and had our wine and cheese in the room.
Great first day.
