Beleeeeeeve in God, can you just hear it? Lady standing on the corner, "Beleeeeve in God". Well in Chinese (Cantonese) its "Sern Yeah So, sern yeah sooooooooooooo".
This is a true story, I'm laughing already just thinking about it. My grandmother was in the hospital (Beekman Downtown Hospital) for the first time. I forget why, I think she fell, but she was in very lively spirits. I was quite upset, she'd never been in the hospital before, let alone Beekman which doesn't have a good reputation. I wasn't familiar with it, behind City Hall, David took me, its one of my first memories of dating him. I called him up and got teary-eyed, "Grandma's in the hospital", "OK, let's go, my grandparents have been there before".
We sat in the room with Grandma when we suddenly hear a missionary lady singing, "Sern Yeah Sooooo, Sern Yeah Sooooo.....". She was dressed as a Nun, visiting the patients, trying to offer comfort in Chinese I guess. She walks up to Grandma, "SEEERRN YEAH SOOOOO...", & Grandma swats her away with the Chinese old-lady hand wave. "I don't believe in God, I believe in Buddha, ha", as if to say, GO AWAY. It was hilarious. "My daughter believes in God, I don't believe in God, I'm a Buddist" she says holding up her jade as proof -- as if to ward the Christian spirits off. A stare-down of old ladies ensues and the Nun turns to me, looks me straight in the eye and says "Seern Yeah Soooo". I can't help it and burst out laughing right in her face. Not a small ha ha ha, but a gigantic A HA HA HA HA which lasts for about five minutes. She gives up hope on the Tsang family and walks to the woman in the next bed -- this woman needs saving, or at least a little hope and she continues to talk to her. I'm still hysterical and can't help it, so I pull the curtain between the patients and continue to laugh like a hyena. Grandma continues the Chinese old lady "bah" with a wave of the hand shrugs her off. She continues to trash the Nun + flashes the Grandma grin -- we share a secret smile behind the curtain (even David). Hilarious.
