Giddy, euphoric, happy with glee......those are just some of the words/feelings I felt as we left BU. Gary applied to the School of General Studies as he thought it would be easier to get in to and to his great surprise, he was admitted as an undecided major at the Seargant School of Rehabilitation Sciences. My first thought was "oh no", he'll be crushed within a competitive pool of pre-med students. Instead, what I found was a small, warm, nurturing environment.
There are only 954 undergrad's at this small college within BU-that's less than 250 per year. Today, Gary is interested in physical therapy for which they have a 5 year masters program. There are only 60 graduates of the program-yes 60. Unbelievable. The philsophy is a very collaborate one as PT's must work with many different disciplines. Their expectation is that if you declare PT as your major, you will succeed in the 5 year program. Its not a weeding out process as med school is, but an inclusionary curriculum. Wow.
The first year is geared to learning about the sciences and careers available. Many kids at the admitted students day said they liked biology but didn't know what they wanted to do with it. This gives them the opportunity to explore without being fixed in a program. I wanted Gary to transfer in to the broader College of Arts and Sciences but now I see what a blessing it was to have him enter this college. Who knew?.........................& did I tell you about study abroad?
